Fulham vs Newcastle: Fulham 3-1 Newcastle

At Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon, Fulham defeated Newcastle United 3-1 thanks to an outstanding effort.

If we had won, the Magpies would have taken the top spot in the Premier League, but the Whites dominated the first half, with Emile Smith Rowe and Raúl Jiménez giving us the upper hand.

However, Harvey Barnes cut the deficit in less than 30 seconds after the restart, setting up a true struggle in the second half of the match.

It seemed like there was always going to be another goal in the match, and happily Fulham found their way through when substitute Reiss Nelson sent one past the Hammy End in stoppage time.

It took just five minutes for an unaltered Fulham team from our previous Premier League encounter to take the lead, and that came just moments after a goal disallowed for Newcastle.

After Joe Willock went offside and set up Joelinton, the Whites immediately attacked the opposite end to take advantage of the situation.

Adama Traoré was provided a wide pass by Raúl, and he found his partner in the center. With his back to goal, Raúl managed to control the ball with one touch on his chest and then blast into the bottom corner after a clever turn, but there was still much to do.

A few moments later, Smith Rowe opened himself up after receiving a feed from Alex Iwobi, giving a buoyant Craven Cottage fans cause for celebration.

However, his forceful strike struck the crossbar and drifted over.Iwobi was once again the creator as he blasted a pass over after spotting a deft rip from Raúl behind Dan Burn.

However, Nick Pope came out fast to push his shot behind for a corner. After Joachim Andersen’s header from that set-piece was blocked, Antonee Robinson had a chance to shoot but missed.

Then, as Fulham continued their quick start, Iwobi stung Pope’s palms from the edge of the box.

But the second goal, which our reckless performance deserved, was almost upon us. We overloaded the left flank after a brief break, as Iwobi and Smith Rowe executed a deft one-two that resulted in the latter shooting past Pope for a 2-0 lead.

Raúl nearly made the half volley better when he met Saša Lukić’s inswinging cross while the Whites were sizzling in the September sun.

Although he caught it nicely, it was always rising and went wide of the mark. After their disallowed goal, the Magpies had not threatened in the offensive department.

However, in minute 33, Barnes made sure Bernd Leno was aware, forcing a low save from the Fulham number one.

However, it was our chance to attack again almost away, and Pope did a great job with his feet to deflect Adama’s hard shot from a close range around the post.

After that corner, Andersen’s header was again blocked, but a few minutes later, he came dangerously close to scoring a third goal when Pope reached out to stop his 35-yard curler.

After the break, Newcastle, who hadn’t played well in the first half, came flying out of the traps when Barnes calmly sent a shot inside the far post and over Leno in under 30 seconds.

When Iwobi slammed a volley from Adama’s hanging cross, he would have undoubtedly felt he had scored because he had been so good in the first half. However, Pope had amazing reflexes to deflect it behind with his knee.

Raúl tried a fantastic bicycle kick from the corner, and another intervention by Pope was needed because of a deflection on its way through.

Smith Rowe will have been frustrated to slice his shot just before the hour mark when an Andreas Pereira free-kick was cleared to him on the edge of the area.

The boys had responded strongly to United’s goal. With 20 minutes remaining, the atmosphere in SW6 was growing more tense as Newcastle threatened three times in quick succession:

Fabian Schar lashed into the side netting after picking Smith Rowe’s pocket, Leno denied Anthony Gordon after a quick break, and Jacob Murphy’s shot licked the top of the net.

Kenny Tete nearly scored a third goal for Fulham with a barnstorming run down the right, but his shot missed the near post.

After Nelson had picked him out, Iwobi attempted a volley, but it was a challenging shot to stop.

You can image the amount of worry when six were given by the fourth official after they had conceded in the fifth minute of stoppage time the week before, but Nelson put an end to any concerns by hammering home the goal after Magpies captain Bruno Guimaraes unfairly singled him out in the box.

Fulham had to settle for just the three goals to go along with our three points as Rodrigo Muniz’s first goal of the season would have been the cherry on top. However, he hammered over first time from 19 yards after a pick out from fellow substitute Harrison Reed.
